Safe Hands Thinking Minds
Hello my lovely community,

It’s been a while since I’ve written one of these connecting letters and it feels so special to be landing back in your inbox. Thanks for being part of our collective community of care and connection! I am so glad you are here!

My hope is that this newsletter is a mix of warmth, reflection, and inspiration, with a few updates, resources, quotes, and creative sparks sprinkled through. We will aim to send you 4-5 a year so as to not overload but also to stay connected.

If there are things you would like included or requests, please let us know us your feedback matters hugely.

Quote of the Newsletter:

“Every moment and interaction can be an intervention.”

We might not be able to do everything, but we can do something.

In times where things can feel so big and overwhelming - how can we think about what is within our locus and circle of control - what is under our feet? We know that micro moments, whether it is the language we use, a facial expression, a gesture, or an exchange can heal or harm, can open doors or close doors, can increase or decrease shame.

So, what heart prints can we leave? What micro-moments can we notice or contribute to? It might be a micro-moment of hope, certainty, connection, compassion or so much more.

Video of the Month:

Here is such a powerful video about the power of language and vague descriptions, about how behaviour is communication, about how we don’t have emotional x-rays and so much more - imagine if we had these types of videos for other settings, for adults, for different behaviours - I talk about this video and much more in my trauma, language, and interventions training.

Paper or Resource of the Month:

A very well-known paper by Barry Mason on safe uncertainty - such a powerful concept that can be applied and adapted in so many settings.

Some practice and reflective activities by Jo Williams (Research in Practice) around safe uncertainty: Read It Here →

Public Events & Online Modules:

As many of you know most of my training and events are commissioned for specific organisations. However, you asked, and I listened - so I have decided to put on 3 online events open to you or colleagues to book on to, and even better if you can book onto all 3 as they go together beautifully - I have put them as virtual events so that they can be accessible to those all across the country and beyond.

  • There is one on November 25th on emotional anchoring and regulation.
    Join Here →
  • One which goes beautifully with the previous one but also is a fab standalone day is on creative and expressive ways of talking about feelings - December 10th.
    Join Here →
  • And one on the power of language on 17th January. Join Here →
I also have a bunch of online modules where you can work through in your own time including on the trauma deck of cards, parenting patchwork cards, feelings cards, genograms and many more.
There also are an array of other events coming up which you can check out too - would love to see some of you there!

News & Announcements:

I am super excited to announce the arrival of my NEW workbook - years in the making - Taya the Tortoise - available from amazon, the publisher JKP, or all main book stockists.
Taya The Tortoise front cover
This workbook is jam packed for activities, tools, colour worksheets, tips, and my most comprehensive adult guide yet on therapeutic re-parenting, dissociation, survival skills in the context of trauma, using the activity books in enriching ways, and so much more.

This workbook is for those children who have experienced trauma and who have retreated, clammed up, bottled up, disconnected, or gone into themselves. Those who often are harder to connect with, or who have gone into themselves.

I hope this book offers you so many possibilities of support and connection and would love to hear what you think. Please find a video here to give you a flavour of what is inside.

We will also be doing some specific trainings and workshops around Taya so watch this space!

Behind The Scenes Updates:

  • I’ve been beavering away with Mandy Davis to get the manuscript of our new book into the publishers - super excited about this one!
It is focused on the real-world thorny challenges and questions which we are navigating in trauma informed organisational change, such as is trauma informed being overclaimed? Is trauma informed just about being sweet and letting people get away with things? How does a trauma informed organisation feel? Why can trauma informed roles be so hard and trauma inducing? And so much more - watch this space!
  • I have been taking on some new projects with my creative hat role which I love love love: Click Here for More Info →
But in essence supporting people to turn some dryer concepts and materials into more interactive, engaging, and creative material, games, activities, metaphors etc.
  • I’ve been travelling around Scotland, the North of England and Ireland delivering some fab in person events, whilst planning my next big fun travel trip to Sri Lanka.
  • I am working on some exciting projects in Ethiopia, Honduras, Australia and America- more to be shared soon
  • I have been delivering a lot more training and thinking spaces around the voice of the child, creative interventions, and enriching and anchoring onto hope.
  • I have been working on a new set of trainings around school-based abuse (aka bullying).
